Tell us your views on open standards for describing and sharing information

The Cabinet Office is seeking your comments on a metadata and vocabularies proposal on the Standards Hub until 5 September 2013.

In 2012, the Government agreed to implement a set of open standards for government IT to make it more open and accessible to the people and organisations who provide and use our services. The open standards we chose, for software interoperability, data and document formats, will be applied consistently across UK government IT.

There are currently eight challenges being considered which open standards may help to resolve. These are published on the Standards Hub, which is there to help you engage with us, feeding in your thoughts and ideas on which open standards we should use in government IT.
The metadata and vocabularies proposal includes responses to one of these challenges: ‘Describing and sharing our information’. It sets out a possible minimum set of metadata elements for documents, information assets and datasets.

The proposal is the next phase in the work towards selecting an open standard for describing and sharing information in government, in line with the Open Standards Principles.

The Open Standards Board will focus on making sure that our choice of open standards meet users’ needs and achieve a level playing field for open source and proprietary software. They will consider the ideas and proposals put forward through the Hub and will advise us on which open standards to implement.

We also have two other proposals now open for comment, one on cross platform character encoding and the other on persistent resolvable identifiers.
    You can find them here:
